The Big Ten conference was also established nearly 40 years before the Southeastern Conference. The SEC was only 30 years old in the 60s. Maybe that had something to do with it?

Gawd, man, that's stubborn.

Because a Big Ten championship meant Pasadena. It meant something, so people planned for it.
