I don't want to throw cold water on all the fun but unless you come from the Ivy League, Cambridge/Oxford or a few select schools like MIT or Stanford, no one really gives a frick where you went to school. That's right Gators and Aggies, no Oooo's and Ahhh's if you tell someone you graduated from Texas f'ing A&M.

This. You cannot find a job where a hiring decision will be made based upon an A&M degree versus another school in the SEC. Same for Florida.

I work for a defense contractor here in Denver. We do lots of engineering sh1t and hire a lot of young college graduates (> 3.2 GPA in field of study required). There are a few hundred people that work in my division. I can tell you that if the hiring managers were to receive a resume from anything Alabama, they would automatically throw it in the trash. We do have one Auburn grad working here... but he was only interviewed because they didn't realize Auburn was in Alabama (plus the guy was originally from Canada).

From the SEC, we have a few UF grads, a few aTm'ers, and the one Auburn guy. No other SEC people. Graduates from SEC schools other than UF and aTm don't get a lot of consideration, because there is a stigma attached to being from the Deep South. Almost everyone who works here is from CU Boulder or Big Ten schools. We also have a few Ivy Leaguers, primarily from Cornell. Most of my co-workers view the SEC as considerably inferior from an academic standpoint.

Edit: Also one Mizzou guy.

I don't get why anybody would care about this. Vandy is clearly #1 and after that... well if you're #2 vs. #3, does anybody really care? Should they? And I'm not even sure about #1: How many smart engineers does Vandy produce, for example? I've never met one, and I think I would have if they existed.

Likewise Georgia is clearly a good school, but I know exactly 0 engineer graduates from Georgia. But I know plenty of very smart, very sharp engineers from LSU, which ranks low on any list I've seen. So what does any list mean? To me it is apples and USB thumb drives.
