Kingsbury to help our number crunch?

I despise the grey shirt system, and having a kid verbally committed for over a year, only to have the coach tell him at the last second he's going to have to graduate early, or pay his way for a year. I'm not saying I will support A&M any less, I just hate the practice. I'm not even saying if it is unwarranted. Obviously you are doing that to the less talented kids, and if they prove their worth, they will earn their scholly. It is the kids that have shut it down under the premise they are getting a ship, and then get fricked when more talented kids start committing later in he process. It makes me sick to do that to a kid, and A&M is about to do that.
With that being said, who are recruits Kliff can "steal" from us to help our numbers problem? We are up against the 85 by about 5 ships in my estimation. So this "counting backwards" crap ain't what we are up against. All of them matter. So who does Kliff take with him? Some WRs? Jordan Points? Kenny Flowers? Cameron Clear? Jonathan Wiggins?

I don't know if your estimation is correct.

I count 3 that we're over. Here's how that gets resolved:
1. If you're a redshirt senior and not on the 2-deep, you're probably done, as the university has fulfilled its obligation to you. Read between the lines here.
2. Look for at least 3 players to transfer to get more playing time.
I think that we'll have a total of 80 or less scholarship players by fall camp.

I seriously doubt he gets any of the Mid Termers, those guys are literally enrolling in a few weeks. Clear just committed not long ago as well. I also don't see him getting defensive guys as he isn't an active recruiter nor would he interact with them much when they were on campus since he wasn't coaching them. Then you can also eliminate the "elite" guys, they just aren't going to go to Tech. The skill guys are also much more likely than the OL as well. Distance also plays a factor, a kid from Dallas is much more likely to go to Lubbock than a kid from Houston.
So the most likely guys I see him going after are Quincy, Kenny Hill, and maybe James White (though that is a reach). Any of them are very solid recruits but not elite guys and they could be looking at the A&M roster and see themselves buried but if they went to Tech they would be a star. I actually think it is possible he may get a transfer or two. We have a lot of talented kids that likely will never start for us.
I actually don't know that we hit a big grey shirt issue though. The numbers still work for now and we are going to lose a few to grades and likely have at least one decommit (they just happen). I will say I would much rather be in this position than how we have been in the past where we "shut it down" at positions and then got hit with decommits and taking kids that would never qualify only to get caught thinking we had a solid class but suddenly losing 3 or 4 gems off of it. The other issue is we would end up taking kids late that we never wanted to offer but we needed a ____ for depth, those types of recruits RARELY end up working out. Our "reaches" this year are on kids that weren't highly rated but the coaches offered very fast because of what they saw. That's very different than settling on a kid you have been looking at for a year but were holding out for better talent.

There's only two of our recruits that Kingsbury had a hand in: Kenny Hill and Cameron Echols-Luper. He shared credit in both.
The breakdown is as follows:
Beaty - Adeboyejo, Arnold, Echols-Luper, Gonzalez, Gustafson, Hill, Huggins, Manning, Miles, Points, Tabuyo, Wilson
Polian - Aguilar, Clear, Tabuyo, Wade
Wallerstedt - Chevis, Claiborne, Flowers, Sezer, Stuckey, Walker, Washington
McKinney - Chevis, Davis, Garner, Griffin, Parker, Seals-Jones, Stewart, White, Wiggins
Kingsbury - Echols-Luper, Hill
Yates - Ellis, Miles, Edward Williams
Anderson - Golden
Snyder - Wade
Price - Walker, Jaquay Williams

I agree the 85 limit is no concern or certainly far less of a concern. Some RS Srs graduate. Some kids will transfer. Some that are buried on the depth chart may have a mysterious "injury" that gives them a medical exemption. BTW, I don't feel too badly about any of those kids. All of them got a shot and so long as they had a good attitude and worked hard they will get a free college education, even if the weren't very talented.
I don't like "grey shirts" and hope we don't end up going that way. If we are I hope it ends up more like the Zimmerman situation where we are telling those kids NOW that it might happen so they have 2 months to explore options if they would rather go somewhere else. In the end though it's big time college football and it's a cutthroat business. I suppose if we "grey shirted" someone the best candidate would actually be Sezar as he likely qualifies for a full academic ride being a minority Valedictorian of his class.

Why would we grey shirt one of the guys who will likely enroll in December?

seen some smoke about kenny being really close to kk, beyond that I think we're good.

I'd be sad to lose Kenny if that happens but the only reason he would go is fear of competition. Thus it is a win/win, either he stays because he truly thinks he is good enough to beat anyone or he goes because he doesn't. He is a really good talent but he's not "OMG! The world will end if we don't keep him!" type talent.

Uh, shouldn't our Heisman winning quarterback be on this list?

No, because he'll be a player-coach and since the NCAA doesn't have a rule preventing that, he will be allowed to keep his eligibility, not count against the scholarship limits, and draw a salary.

We have room for at least one more.

I was thinking along the lines of Kenny Hill. Promise him the starting job for 4 years. Seems like Kenny might jump on that.

In theory Kenny Hill is a possibility. The flip side though is Sumlin can say, "No doubt if you come to A&M the competition is fierce. Our QB battle in the offseason last year was epic. Of course, I just got back from a trip to NYC with the winner of that competition."
