However, for that to happen - it's going to have to be more bad times ahead for Auburn. Because if Gus is just good enough it may be a reprieve for JJ

Only way for Gus to succeed IMO is to tell JJ to frick off, that he (Gus) is running the show and it is his team. Not sure that is possible, but if it happened, then maybe JJ won't matter.
I will go ahead and say I am not optomistic.
