This is definitely true. I don't know Marquis Lee's stats from tonight, but I consider him the best player in the country. Someone mentioned that he won't win the HT because his team will have 5 losses. That is a valid point. But it's a valid point because the voters tie too much importance to team accomplishments when it's an individual award.

Marquis Lee can't help that his coach is semi retarded, his QB has midget hands, and his team's D coordinator is actually a dead guy being held up by popsicle sticks and bailing wire.

ETA: I pretty much hate all things Southern Cal, so saying that I think Lee is the best player in the country is me rising above my biases. Like I did when I admitted that I think Manziel is ridiculously talented as well.

I don't think team record should completely take someone out of the running, but I don't think you should ignore it either. How great can you be if you're team is lousy/average? People still bicker over Paul Hornung's Heisman because he played on a 2 win team when he won it. He did absolutely everything, but it didn't mean anything for his team. Can you really be the best player in America if all the stuff you do doesn't make a difference in the entire point of playing the sport(winning). I'm on the fence regarding that argument still.

And I know USC isn't 2 win bad and Lee is definitely one of the top playmakers this season(he overshadowed one of the top ones from last season that was on his team). He plays a position that doesn't traditionally get a lot of credit from voters over "star" positions. He's not to blame for the losses, but that could be played against him too. How often is a game in the hands of a WR compared to a QB? The QB needs a WR, but the WR needs the QB more.

Record will always be a factor when it comes to the people who matter, that's just the way it's become. Although I think they are slowly getting back to identifying the best player and not just the best player on the best team...

You don't know what you have until its gone...
With that being said I would love to see how ND would be without Te'o, I think we all know where A&M would be without Manziel but I think its going to be tough for him to win it being a freshman. But I do agree that he could have better years ahead of him and if that happens then what? With those numbers how do you not give it to him again...I say wait on Manziel and give it to Te'o...that would be badass seeing a defensive player win it. Although I think ND is overrated and will get smoked in the title game I think Te'o brings more to that team than people realize. Now only if Tyrann was still with LSU and put up the same or better numbers that he did last year...that outta stir some shite up...but whatever he fcked up sucks to suck.
