I really don't like that they have killed off "Old Sarge" but was glad that the "TStar" is gone for instance.

I am exactly the opposite on those two issues

Ol' Sarge needed to go, but the T-star was the best alternate logo that we'd ever had, and even though I get what Cook's trying to do by unifying our logo marketing, but we really could have gotten some serious mileage out of that logo, I believe.

the problem with the T-star is that it is extremely hard to brand it as a secondary logo. It's incredibly generic and there are a ton of state schools that use something similar. What you want from your brand is that when someone sees it, they immediately recognize it as Texas A&M. It may work for you because you are an Ag but to the general public, it simply was never going to work as a secondary. It lacks any overt association with the university and it would take a lot of money to really bring much power out of it.

IMO, Ol' Sarge would be fine and is actually a much easier association but it runs counter to the direction the university wants to go in that we want to emphasize the University as a whole and not just the corps. The two we kept (block ATM and State with ATM inside) are the two best for now. The state logo isn't really a secondary though because it is just a derivative of the traditional block.

Long term I'd like to see a true secondary brand (think of UF's "F" on their field) developed but I don't really have much thought on what it should be. I don't think either the T-Star or Ol Sarge is a good fit though. My guess is we have contracted a branding company to work on this in the background and over the next few years we will introduce something after our primary is further established with the move to the SEC.
