So does Texas and Bama.

quote:
"When I get to 'Saw varsity's horns off,' I'm not thinking ahead to the Texas game. I'm thinking, man, this is an amazing family to belong to. It means family to me."
Is this going to get replaced with "Cut those Tiger nutz off"?

I don't see their entire stadium "sawing" back and forth every game. Let it go.

The kid did an adequate job of explaining the war hymn's purpose.
Texas' mention is now inicidental in the context of what is actually meant. It might not have been in the 20s--when the entire student body was comprised of soldiers whose only escape was found in athletics and beating Texas--but times have changed. What keeps us singing the song the same as back then is our adherence to tradition--a product of our roots.
It's pretty simple. I never understood how people view the war hymn as directed solely at Texas.

Sawing varsity's horns off holds a revered place in college football's best scenes. Suggesting otherwise is just petty.

I think Texas's football team was referred to as just "varsity" back then. They were the longhorns, yes, but I don't think their team was called that.
If I'm mistaken, the other alternative is that Texas had a varsity team and a subordinate team (I.e. junior varsity). And we played the varsity team.

Could A&M have been the JV team

Texas hasn't given two shits about TAMU in years, despite what you think. Ask them about the Red River Rivalry....

National champs in 1919, the year preceding the war hymn's composition. So no.

So does varsity in and of itself have horns? Why not saw Bevo's horns off? It's just confusing is all.

How is that relevant to the scene at Kyle?
I always get a kick out of Texas fans who dubiously try to frame OU as the real rival. It's always to trivialize A&M. Which is funny because it implies respect for OU. Which of course conflicts with the fundamental trait of a real rivalry--hate.
Sure, the game is more relevant nationally. But the cultural clash between Texas and OU is basically unidentifiable. I still don't know what it is.

Yeah, I didn't compose the hymn. But again, the school was the Texas Longhorns and the team, I think, was just varsity. Thus in the context of a football game, I guess the idea was to saw varsity's horns off.
I don't know. And as you're aware, lots of shite we do is confusing--most of which predates contemporary A&M.

LOL no. Not legit in the 1st place and trying to claim it almost 100 years later is total horseshite.

Definitely a tongue in cheek comment.
Relax.
As an aside, I think I read somewhere that the NCAA--or maybe an affiliate--recognized the '19 team as national champs. Not sure, though.
