The most reasonable (and least ) is that both were seen as "meh" hires, but the powers that be thought that Shula's name may get him a little more cred on the recruiting trail.

Basically, it was a daddy thing.

A few bama posters on here have posted some "behind the scenes" stuff but for the life of me I can't remember. Supposedly, Croom all but had the job locked up, and bama really did want to hire him, but something happened (and no I don't think it was race related) that made them go in another direction. I can't remember all the details though, someone (maybe genro?) posted about it a few weeks ago in a thread.
