When I look at the roster, it looks like you guys have talent, speed, and size. What has been the problem this year with the defense?

If Tennessee's defense plays up to their potential, I think Saturday's game is going to be closer than most are predicting and closer than the spread.

transitioning to a 3-4 with an underwhelming dolt calling the shots.

Tennessee changed their defensive scheme completely - to the 3-4 - and I guess some people expected there to be no growing pains whatsoever.

What we're experiencing is slightly different than growing pains.

The kids at Tennessee for whatever reason have not taken to the great coaching they have been receiving. I bet with another year or two these players would fully grasp the complexity of the systems on both sides of the ball.

Secondary is slow and can't tackle. Our LBs are for the most part decent. Lathers hasn't been playing well and Maggitt is hurt. AJ Johnson is man child though. DL is meh, Mount McCullers is a bright spot there. On the whole, they don't cover well and are out of position too much which leads to big plays.

Tennessee is slow as shite on D. The only real difference maker we have speed and size wise is Maggitt and he has been hurt all year.

The thing is, they've played well at times. But its like other times they just shite the bed and forget where they're supposed to be.

It hasn't really changed completely. In theory, we are now a 3-4 defense with that chain wearing guido in charge. In reality, we are a hybrid defense, just as we have been for a while, that runs nearly as much nickel as we do 3-4.

Yeah. Growing pains are when a good team experiences difficulties with a change.

What is it called when an abysmal team experiences difficulties with a change?

All I'm saying is temper your expectations, though it will probably be moot anyway since I doubt Dooley makes it past the end of the year.

Tennessee was a top 30 defense nationally last year with everybody back and now we are one of the worst defenses in the nation.

I grant you that. I would be curious to see if Tennessee can improve under the 3-4 though.

Well we lost Randolph in the secondary w/ a torn ACL early in the year, and before the season started we lost Lanier (starting CB) to grades. Then mix in the fact that it's the first year in Sunseri's system and the fact that Curt Maggit hasn't been the same since he tweaked his shoulder and got turf toe. A poor defense was fairly predictable given the circumstances.
