Muschamp isn't coming back to Auburn. He would only ever consider it if Jacobs were gone and his pastor took over at AD. The Gruden, Carroll, Cowher talk needs to stop too. It just makes us look retarded.

NFL options are always attractive because you're talking about guys who see the pinnacle of football structure and organization. At universities with deep pockets such at Auburn, that organization and structure is made possible with our facilities and resources. However, it's not a clean transition.

I wont add any names to the pot just yet. I want to see how this season plays out first. However, I want to pit you guys a question. What would you guys need to see out of Van Gorder to give him the nod? I know a lot of you discount his personality to give him a chance in hell at becoming a head coach, but some of the better coaches in football, in any league, aren't exactly personable.

Just a thought

My only thing with him is that I'd rather not go down the same road of hiring someone with a less-than-respectable prior HC record again. That's kinda what got us into this mess to begin with (well, sorta).

To me, Muschamp/Gruden/Carroll stuff was just pipe dream banter, but the thing about that is, who's out there that's doing well and that we honestly have a realistic shot of hiring?

That's what worries me about canning Chizik this season. If we get rid of him now, we very well could put ourselves in a worse position than we started in if we make the wrong hire at the wrong time.

We'll be fighting Arkansas, and possibly Tennessee for head coaches, and unless we clean house in the AD, I can't imagine anyone taking the AU job over one of those two. It's clear that we have too many people involved that have no business doing so, and until that changes I don't see how anyone can view this as an attractive job.

I thought this was a well known fact...

It's not so much that he isn't personable, as much as it is I'm just not sold on him as an HC. He seems more like a John Chavis type to me than a Rhoads or Muschamp type.

You need a balance of micro-management and letting the coordinators do their damn job.

You then need someone who can recruit and inspire players.

BVG hates recruiting iirc, being a reason why he was gone from georgia southern after a year.

To paraphrase Shug, "If they don't think an Auburn man can get the job done, they ought to shut the place down".

Having someone with ties to AU and a passion for returning AU to prominence is paramount. It's time to stop looking for pedigrees and find someone who's passion will transfer to the players.

Coordinators are for the Xs and Os shite. Head coaches are for motivation, discipline, and program pride. Plus, to go against the machine that currently resides in-state, the next HC is going to need one hell of an axe to grind to stay motivated.

I have no idea who would fit the criteria I listed, just thinking out loud.
