They just hadn't learned the defense well enough, had been in the doghouse, and had faced other things outside the football field. Has nothing to do with them eventually being a bust.

Did you play any organized sports growing up? It's much easier to learn on the field while actually doing it. Besides, there's a huge difference in Roof's defense and BVG's.
