I watched the offensive line collapse several times during the SMU game (was apparent in total penalties too) and I'm wondering if BJ Anderson is the right fit for us. We all know Sherman was heavily vested in the Oline but how much was unknown to me until now. Do you guys think it's just growing pains from the switch from a tight 50-50 run/pass formation to the spread or is BJ Anderson set for a job back a Mac Donalds?

I think a lot is growing pains, but I did expect a little decline. Sherman, for all his flaws, was a fantastic with the O Line. Jim Turner was great as well.

I think it's the system and it being new to the linemen. Its different to them to be in a two point stance and we have to realize their job in run blocking is no longer to fire off the ball and knock the DL back. It's to hold containment from the gap that's already there in their splits.

That said, I'm waiting for Trey to have a break out day. I thought it'd be SMU but they really stacked the box to prevent it which caught us off guard

They are used to the three point stance. You don't get the same amount of push with a two point stance. The players we have on oline want to knock someone over. Not the right fit for them, but they need to get used to it and improve.

I wouldn't push the panic button yet. OL is all about not only quality of talent but everyone doing exactly what they are supposed to do. It's a big transition they are going through and part of that has also extended to the RB's. They are trying to bounce too much (esp TW). If we are still struggling to run and pass protect 2 games from now I will be nervous.

overall are not doing as bad as people think as far as holding the pocket, obviously the run game could be better but we really haven't committed to it yet in these 2 games.

90th in the country in sacks allowed. Huge drop from last season.

It will look better if Johnny starts to run the offense better and gets the ball out quickly.

To me the issue isn't pass blocking, it is the lack of decent run blocking out of the 2 point stance.

It is very hard to drive people when starting up so high. You have a leverage disadvantage, which is even larger since we don't use a snap count. Good defensive lineman that are usually quicker off the ball movement than you and start lower makes it very hard to move them down the field. You can move them horizontally, but they can throw you off easier than they could if you were in a 3 point.

Do designed QB draws that go for a loss count as a sack?

To me the issue is the offensive scheme not just the blocking style or the stance.

Under Leach Texas Tech averaged run offense rank of 109, 3.82 YPC, 89.42 YPG.

Under the Holgerson/Kingsbury at UH - 64.75, 4.78, 148.26

Under Holgerson at OSU - 47, 5.15, 166.5

Holgerson 2011 at WVU - 92, 3.82, 122.69

Obviously Leach just didn't give a damn about running the ball so interpret those numbers as you will but looking at the rest of the data only OSU has had even a modicum of success rushing out of this offense. These offenses are just not conducive to the run.

You throw in JFF and our numbers will be much better I think for the year but do we really want to rely completely on a freshman QB to get not only all of our passing yards but all of our rushing yards as well.
