Patterson has sustained that program, fielding some of the fiercest defenses in the nation year in and year out while in a MWC that also contained a solid BYU and Utah team. He's also beaten solid OOC teams such as Boise State, Wisconsin, etc.
You aren't going to find many people that don't love that dude as a HC.
Hawkins was a great coach for Boise, sucks that he flamed out at Colorado. Peterson has taken that program to new heights, had them recruit better than they ever have before, and has his team beat more talented teams on the regular.
Key word is in the MWC. In Patterson's 4th year, he had a losing record. It happens. Patterson has sustained the program but it was in the MWC. TCU should be the elite MWC team, they actually have history and Texas recruiting. We are going to see what Patterson is made out of when he joins the big 12.
Patterson has not been tested. Kyle Wittingham is another perfect example of a coach continuing what someone else built. Utah went from 10 win seasons to 7-5 in a weak pac 12.
Petersen has continued, but like I said, he didn't build it. It is much easier focusing on one game a year instead of around 6.
As for more talented teams. Its not like Vtech and Wisconsin were bringing in amazing recruits. They beat Oklahoma but that was in a bowl game the Sooners didn't take seriously, kinda like Bama vs Utah.

actually think Muschamp is going to work out at Florida. They've got to get that offense together, but he'll field some fierce defenses for you with the talent he has at his disposal.
They need to learn how to cover the "punter keeper" play..

And they only won 4 games his last year, but I guess the train-wreck that is TN sports you gotta do a little bottom fishing.
Way to do your research
La tech played Auburn, LSU, and a Navy team that went 10-4 and beat Mizzou in a bowl game.
Now add in Boise State, and a 8-4 Fresno State (had Ryan Matthews) and you have a pretty hard schedule for WAC terms

The MWC wasn't a typical non-AQ conference. They had good teams every single year. Even outside of the Big Three.
And Va Tech and Wisconsin were definitely more talented than TCU and Boise.

The past 2 years it has been like that. The WAC was the best non aq conference with Nevada, Hawaii, Boise State, and Fresno State.
They were more talented, but its not a huge talent gap like you think, especially Wisconsin.
The Boise State win over Va Tech is much more impressive than TCU over Wisconsin. Wisconsin is usually around the 50 range when it comes to recruiting rankings. The farther you go down, the less important recruiting rankings are.

Apparently you do considering you are dogging a coach for not winning a lot of games in 2009 when he only lost to one team that didn't make a bowl game. Not to metion, he gave your LSU tigers a scare.

Pretty small sample size, and yeah BYU went to the shitter so I'll give you it's been weaker than usual for a few years.

I find the number of wins these guys are able to amass over more talented teams, along with the domination they consistently display over quality opposition in their own conference, along with taking care of business against the trash in their conference a pretty solid coaching job. Patterson in particular, has displayed over and over again that his defense will rise up to the challenge against top notch opposition and win the game for him (...the fighting RGIII's not included )
Most people agree that Patterson meets the criteria at this point in his career as a "proven head coach". Not everyone agrees on Peterson, but I think he's solid as a rock. His teams seem to drop a game they shouldn't every year though.

People said the same thing about Rich Rodriguez, Brian Kelly, and Dan Hawkins. They were considered as safe as you can get, especially Rich Rod.
The Big 10 has been weak for a while now. Their bowl record is abysmal. Wisconsin was not that much more talented than TCU. TCU was only ranked three spots lower than Wisconsin in recruiting in 2009, and was ranked higher in 2010. Wisconsin won't stay on top for much longer the way Michigan and Ohio State are recruiting. I was going to say Penn State too, but they lost everything.

I hope that he stays at TN for 3 yrs and then leaves for bama (cause he is such a coveted coach). Why a school with TN's resources hired him is an indication that there was no-one else that would take the job.

The 3-3-5 defense had me EXTREMELY wary of how he'd fare at Michigan.

Brian Kelly
Is he a failure? He took over a pretty rank situation.

Dan Hawkins
Yeah, he sucked. Nepotism will screw you over I guess.

They're getting better. They were pretty weak in 2010, I'll give you that, but Wisconsin was a better team on paper than TCU. They had been bowling teams over that year.

Why in the frick are we talking about non-SEC coaches anyway

Stacked??? WTF? They are good on D and that's it. They can't even win the ACC.
I'm not concerned about this year because of the whole Charlie Weis failure and hiring of Pease. It's almost like starting fresh for Boom.
I won't be please if we lose to FSU but I certainly won't be mad.
We were broken in more ways than one. Boom is doing a good job turning things in the proper direction.
The clowns only won last year because of Brantley.

Because 2 or 3 of them will be SEC coaches next year. Just don't know the schools yet??

I don't think it's possible to misread how a QB will perform than everyone did this guy.
Dude was supposed to be a talented guy that had command of that offense.

John came from a 2A private school. He didn't face crap for competition. It certainly didn't prepare him for the SEC as evidenced by his inability to perform on the field. Too much hype not enough talent and leadership.
He gave everything he had and I appreciate him for that.

Joker: no question
JLS: <8 wins, then maybe
Dooley is on the fence
Muschamp isnt getting fired after this year, they'd really have to shite the bed.

I think Dooley wins 8 games and unfortunately is given another year. Also I think Muschamp wins around 8 games and will be given one more year.
I think if Dools gets fired Ten should throw a boatload of money at Pete Carroll. He reminds me of Bruce Pearl and he would add the glamour that Tenn needs to be relevant again. You might end up on Probation but at this point would it not be worth it?
Also Vol fans could hope the he restores the program to national champion status and beats down Kiffin in the process.
What does the rant think

I hate this line of thinking. It's doublethink. You want to criticize a team for sucking, but then suggest that they "accept their role" or, more specifically, "stop trying." It's nonsense.
