He's pretty damned good at both, as long as he's at a school like Bama.
Not as much success at lesser schools.

Saban has also been given an open checkbook at Bama to hire as many people as he thinks he needs to do a WHOLE lot of behind the scenes work that makes him appear to be an otherworldly recruiter/talent evaluator. IF you have 50-100 well-trained guys working nonstop for you. you are always going to look a whole lot better than others trying to do the same amount of work with 25 or so guys.
