Was the '96 FSU/Florida national title rematch as controversial as '11 Bama/LSU?

In 1996, FSU beat Florida 24-21 in the last game of the regular season. Nebraska lost in the Big 12 title game and Florida got a rematch in the national title game, blowing out FSU 52-20.
I was only 10 years old when that game was played and I am curious if it was as controversial as the LSU/Bama rematch was. The scenarios are eerily similar with a close game followed by a blowout in the rematch.

Except UF was a conference champion...as was FSU.

Controversial? The only people bitching were LSU and Okie State fans, everyone else knew Bama was top 2.

A 1/9 LSU-Alabama pissing match thread was definitely needed again

Was Alabama a conference champion?
Was Florida State a conference champion?
Was LSU a conference champion?
Was Florida a conference champion?
Situations are different. Hell, Alabama didn't even finish 1st in its own division.

I'm asking if anyone knows whether FSU fans were in an uproar over the rematch or not? You know, stuff like "they didn't deserve to be there", etc. Are FSU fans still pissed about that game or have they moved on and accepted Florida as the legitimate national champion?

Link to a BCS rule requiring a team to win its conference and division in order to play in the national title game please.

Even after Nebraska lost, it wasn't a national title game (yet). We needed #2 Arizona St to lose in the Rose Bowl as well.

That's why I started it late at night hoping maybe to get an actual answer instead of 20 pages of nothing.

No one said its a requirement... but its surely a justification for LSU fans to be a little upset

From 1996?

I was wondering this also. With #1 FSU and #2 ASU being undefeated, why did they not play each other in the title game? I know we did not have the BCS then, but we still had a bowl coalition starting in 1992 that tried to match the top two teams. Was it a Rose Bowl issue I am assuming?

Obviously

Yes. The Big 10 and Pac 10 wanted nothing to do with the alliance/coalition. Same reason Nebraska didn't play Penn St in 94 and Michigan in 97.

What a thorn in the side of college football the Rose Bowl is.

In 96 the Rose bowl was still not a part of the process. So, by contact, #2ASU/#4OSU in Rose, #3UF/at large. Sugar made the obvious and best choice of #1FSU. For fan reaction the best thing is to google old newspaper articles or find a Seminole site with some older posters who are fairly reasonable to give you their view. If I had interest I'd do it...but, honestly, no interest.

Now what would be interesting is to find out the impact of this game on Rose Bowl acquiescing and joining BCS. #2 ASU was shut out of NC and maybe this was the catalyst for their change of heart. Been too long ago for me to remember.

Thanks for the info. People cry about the BCS a lot, but it is 10x better than the system used before it.

Michigan had to split the 1997 title because of Rose Bowl issues if I remember right and the BCS started in 1998. Michigan beat #8 Washington St in the Rose and undefeated Nebraska beat Tennessee for the split title. The Big Ten/Pac 12 moves slower than a turtle and will only change if they start to get the raw end of a deal.
Funny how Delaney was so adamantly opposed to a playoff or even a plus 1 only a few years ago and now the SEC wins 6 straight and he wants a playoff.
