Could SEC dominance eventually hurt college football?

What if they make a playoff and the SEC still wins every year (highly likely), will people outside the southeast ever give up on watching college football because they have no chance?

People from NY and Chicago don't watch CFB anyways. Only people who watch it are southerners and west coasters

No. The high standard of excellence will cause others to improve. Coach Kelly, referring to AU and LSU, said he has to get a better front 7 and recruit bigger OL.

I live in the West Coast and even though I haven't been here for long, my hypothesis is that people over here don't give a frick about college football

I think it's already hurt college football. There's literally nobody around to challenge the SEC's throne and the overall college football landscape has gotten really boring over the last 3-5 years. Say what you want about Pete Carroll's USC teams but their dominance made college football a lot better and more interesting to watch.

Unfortunately I don't see the SEC winning to many more in a row, especially with a playoff. Once teams like Oregon, USC, OK st. realize they have to recruit defensive players in order to compete they will snag one from us

I doubt with a playoff that SEC maintains the dominance that it has with several consecutive BCSCG wins. Just too hard to do in a playoff scenario.
That said, if we're going to blame any decline on anyone it's conferences like the Big Ten who have traditionally been very good in football but have flat out mailed it in. I blame their suckage, not the SEC for doing what you're supposed to do to win.

Exactly. Thats why A&M and in part, Mizzou, will have success in the SEC. High standards, a tradition of winning and excellence, a reputation for being the best, and being known for having extremely passionate fans who view the sport as a religion. That is contagious and everyone in the conference is expected to perform well because we have a reputation to maintain.
A&M, with its resources, tradition, passionate fanbase, and this new attitude brought by the new coaching staff will hopefully allow A&M to have success. Being part of the SEC is a really good sales pitch to recruits. Recruits always mention it. They can stay home in Texas and play in the best conference that produces the most NFL draft picks. That is awesome!

Considering there is no reason for Bama and LSU to not be a 4 team playoff every year, I'd say it only helps us more.

What about when they went 4-0 against the SEC with an average margin of victory of 30 PPG? Or the incredible amount of asskickings they handed down to some very good teams over the years? People in places that don't care about college football were interested in watching USC. There isn't a team with that kind of cache around anymore. Maybe Bama can become that team one day but they have a long way to go.

I agree it has temporarily hurt CFB but I agre with this too:

Unfortunately I think Meyer will make OSU better than they ever were with sweatervest. Meyer knows how to recruit. Michigan is getting better. OU will continue to be good. It's not like they've never had good defenses. Everyone else has been concentrating on offense. They will change.

This is a good point, there are so many coaches out there with gimmicky, high speed, get great quick offensive schemes; once more guys like CUM get to other schools they will catch up with the SEC some
