They may have confronted him but it's hard to make someone feel the pain through reason. They have to experience it.

It's very similar to trying to convince someone to stop a serious addiction that's going to eventually make things very bad for them or kill them.

People can try to reason with them, but usually to no avail. Usually they will continue to do the same thing until it gets to the point where they have "bottomed out" emotionally, physically, and in spirit. Until then, their emotions will trump reason every time. Logic and reason take a back seat in these situations...like when someone's "in love". It's temporary insanity.
