Auburn's Wrights Mill Road Elementary principal Lynda Tremaine heard Cam Newton was in town Thursday, and wondered if he would stop by the school to say hello.

"That's about all I thought of it, though," Tremaine said. "I know he's so busy."

Newton, Auburn University's beloved Heisman Trophy winner-turned-NFL Rookie of the Year and quarterback of the Carolina Panthers, regularly visited Wrights Mill in the fall of 2010 when he mentored four fifth grade boys who were struggling in the classroom both academically and behaviorally

Tremaine said Newton's mentoring did wonders for the boys as their grades improved and teachers raved about their good behavior.

"I don't know if it's because they didn't want to let Cam down or because they were being held accountable, but he certainly made a difference," Tremaine said.

Part of the reason for Newton's visit to the school Friday was to catch up with his four young friends. Since three of them were in class at Drake, Newton was told he would have to wait until the boys could be driven over to Wrights Mill.

When the boys arrived at Wrights Mill, Newton was visiting the different classrooms on campus.

"He peeked in on a few and led the classes in big 'War Eagles,'" Tremaine said.

Once Newton was summoned to Tremaine's office, the boys decided to have some fun with their mentor.

"They wanted to jump out and surprise him," Tremaine said. "I had one boy hide under my desk and the others hid behind the door."

It was hugs and high-fives all around when they greeted each other.

"It was just the cutest thing," Tremaine said. "The kids adore him. I think these little fellas know how lucky they are."

Newton's sincerity was proven again when he showed that, even as an NFL star, he has kept mementos of the boys. "What I thought was cute was when he pulled out his iPhone and played some of the videos he had saved of them," Tremaine said. "They said, 'You mean you've kept them after all this time?' And Cam said, 'Man, I will always keep these of y'all.' They were tickled, needless to say."
