Obviously football is LSU's moneymaker, but I wonder at other schools, like Kentucky, if basketball is their biggest source of revenue in front of football. I wouldn't think so just because of how big a collegiate football teams fan base is, but we all know UK is a basketball school first and foremost

Here is the data from 2010-11. Louisville, Duke, UNC, Kansas, Wake Forest, and a few others made more on basketball. Kentucky made $17M for football and only $5M for basketball.

true, but count merchandise sales and post season play. I'm sure UK loses money when they go to bowl games

Not even close. Football makes 3-4x (don't feel like looking it up) more than basketball even at Kentucky. Kentucky is usually in the top 25-30 in football revenue. Schools like Duke may be a little closer to what you're looking for.

Why?

We travel as well as anyone.

You do realize Kentucky is always in the attendance top 25 right?

It's actually 67k, but recent seasons have seen averages of close to 69k (not this season though).

It costs a school a lot of money for them to move a football team like that. And I beg to differ that they travel as well as anyone...

merchandise sales

Kentucky is ranked 7th in merchandise sales for 2011. Two spots ahead of LSU.

This is why I was interested, since I don't have all the facts. Just trying to see the difference between their bball and fball programs

You do realize our recent bowl games have for the most part been in Nashville and Memphis right?

Nashville is 45 minutes from Kentucky. Memphis is about 2 hours.

We love our football team as much as anyone. Even LSU.

I found this quote from that article pretty suprising. It really is no wonder why the SEC is creating such a gap between it and the rest of the country football wise.

quote:

Not only is Louisville basketball the most profitable basketball program in the country, it’s more profitable than the football program at any Big East school. It’s also more profitable than any football program in the ACC or Pac-10!

It's not "from" anything. Merch sales is merch sales.

I forget where I saw the list that included college baseball revenues. LSU baseball had more revenue than all but 4-5 basketball programs.

Sorry for the hijack.

The reason is that Louisville is one of the only big time baskektball programs that sells beer, and even has full bars in their arena.
