Most people expected the return game to be pedestrian.

for the most part thats what we got bro. when we had arenas he was a threat to score everytime they punted to him. maze was decent but he didnt have anywhere near the impact that Arenas had at PR.

I never stated he replaced Arenas' production. However, he gave a better "imitation" than what was expected.

In their final years returning punts (Arenas and Maze) they had the following stat line:

2009: Javier Arenas - 32 returns for 493 yards (15.4 per return) and 1 TD

2011: Marquis Maze - 31 returns for 384 yards (12.4 per return) and 1 TD

Now, I am keeping in mind that Arenas had a far better reputation as a returner during his senior year (leading to less potential attempts), but I never suggested Maze replaced his production. Just that it wasn't "pedestrian" as you tried to suggest. I just think Maze needs a little respect here.
