Well when your conference is competing for the national championship for over half a decade the conference championship looses it's luster.
If you're not one of these team's, then it should be a huge deal to be the best in the most dominating conference ever.

This may be more the heart of it. Expectations are a NC and the SEC game is more of a rite of passage on that quest since 2006.
I'm not sure that it's only because last year Auburn was a heavy favorite and this year LSU would be as well either. Even the Alabama-Florida games seemed more likely to be celebrated as BCS Championship play-in games than anything else.
