also I believe the story also goes that if they backed out there was a clause in the contract that they could just provide us with a suitable replacement team and LSU said we could put ULaLa in their place

Yeah, USL wasn't a "Suitable replacement" for A&M.

There was a home-and-away series in 86-87, then a ten-year contract signed through 1997. When the SEC expanded and went to 8 games, LSU couldn't get 7 home games every year. They needed that 7th home game to break even. LSU offered up USL, paid the money and the Aggies subsequently lost to USL and then started crying about how they weren't suitable and they wanted more money.

Stupid Aggies.

And yes, A&M is in the top ten # of games played for LSU, above Auburn, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Georgia.

I never could bring myself to hate the pigs, even after a loss, but I hate the Aggies. I agree, with Texas out of the picture I could see LSU and A&M developing into quite a rivalry.

Every Aggie I know wants LSU to replace Texas as our Thanksgiving weekend game. It is a natural rivalry that goes back over 100 years and 50 games. Lots of history, lots of controversy, lots of hate.

LSU/Arkie has never really worked because the schools aren't natural rivals. They don't really have much in common as LSU, the distance between the schools is more than the miles it is simply a different culture. A&M and LSU however have a great deal in common with both schools having their primary recruiting bases overlapping. A&M and LSU actually were in the same conference briefly over 100 years ago. Then LSU paid A&M for a long time to come out to BR as a buyout game when A&M was an all male, all military school and the Ags still won a few. Of course things heated back up in the '80s when Billy Cannon Jr came to A&M and of course the Harvey Williams last minute commit change only to haunt A&M his entire career. John David Crow was from Louisiana as was Bucky Richardson and many others that were some of A&M's greatest players.

When I was in school the LSU game started the season and it was almost as big as the Texas game, certainly bigger than any of the other SWC games. When my Dad was in school it was a huge deal when A&M beat LSU in BR and he and some of his buddies snagged a sacred paddle out of an LSU frat house after the game (my Dad was there in the Bryant era). LSU would come to A&M and vandalize the campus and it was the only road venue that you didn't have to wear your uniform to if you were in the Corps. It was nasty, but in a good way.

Nothing would make me or most Aggie fans I know happier than to play LSU to end the season and if the rivalry with Texas ever resumes we can just play them early. Screw Texas. Besides it is going to be funny watching play Tech or TCU that weekend and try to act like it is comparable. This is a 100 year decision for A&M and we would be happy to have LSU as our rival for the next 100 years.
