The Mississippi Secretary of State has given the go ahead for a statewide referendum on bringing Colonel Reb back. Supporters have to get 100,000 signatures for it to be placed on the ballot to be voted on during the 2012 presidential election.

BLOG — A political action committee with the goal of bringing Colonel Rebel back as the official mascot of Ole Miss got some positive news today when Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann certified an initiative to bring it to a potential public vote.Hosemann certified Initative 37 Tuesday morning after it was filed by Arthur Randallson, the Director of the Colonel Reb Political Action Committee, which has a post office box listed out of Southaven. Randallson and his followers seek to re-instate Colonel Rebel as the “official and sole mascot” of Ole Miss, according to a statement released by the group.
The next step for the group is to garner at least 100,000 signatures from registered voters in the state so that the initiative can appear on the 2012 Mississippi Presidential Election Ballot. The state requires that the signatures be evenly divided among the former map of five Mississippi’s congressional districts.
The statement released today states the agenda of the Colonel Reb Political Action Committee, which is not affiliated with the Colonel Reb Foundation, is to have a vote across the state that includes Colonel Reb as a choice for Ole Miss’ mascot. Colonel Reb was not on the ballot in the university’s replacement mascot election, conducted in October 2010, when “Rebel the Black Bear” was chosen as the new mascot and the group has been trying to get that changed ever since. I'm all for it, at first I was pro whatever they thought was best. But now that I think about it, I agree with the guy who said "we traded all our traditions to garner minority athletes only to lose to a bunch of white kids".

I'm glad to see this is at the forefront of our state government's concern.

I thought all of this had been settled. This is going to get crazy if they garner the signatures, and I'm pretty sure they will be able to get them.
100,000 is not that many for a statewide referendum.

do they have to be from actual living voters, or can the dead vote in MS as well

Glad they aren't worrying about unimportant things like improving the economy.

It's safe to assume where your vote would lie.

Easy for me to say bc I could give a damn about the success of OM athletics but as a native Mississippian and a man who values his heritage above all else, I am very happy about this and will be glad to sign any petition along with vote for it

Mississippi is only like 3% Caucasian, be lucky to get that many signatures on a racist initiative.

This is why Mississippi is 50/50 in every good statistic, and first in every bad one.

We're 59% white. The blackest state in America. It's a fair exaggeration.

One thing my post didn't cover that I am curious about is how realistic is 100,000 signatures? I honestly have no idea but wen u include it has to be evenly spread over the districts sounds pretty hard to come up with

There are only 3 million people in Mississippi. I wanna say there are only about 800,000 voters who vote in a given state wide election.

Well first off damn none of us vote
And secondly considering that sounds like it would be pretty hard to get the 100,000

Will they be able to find 100,000 people in Mississippi who can sign their name?

I bet it'll be especially hard to get 20,000 votes in Bennie Thompson's district.
