The 85 limit is on scholarship players only. In theory, you could have 22 starters as walk-ons and none of them would count against your 85 limit.

Why is there a 85 scholarship limit anyway? What's wrong with giving a free education to as many people as possible?

So that the football team can profit more and use that money to pay off the debts of the womens programs mandated by Title IX?

Something to do with some guy with a weird nickname...Bryant, I think...and the way he would sign players he never intended to play just to keep them from playing for rivals.
