How messed up is it that he commutes in Oaktown with no incident, and gets shot up while rolling through his home town of Decatur, Alabama...?

I bet he lives in a much nicer place in the Bay Area than he does in Decatur.
I don't think he has upgraded his Mom - they have a bad history. He stays with a white doctor and his family when he comes home.
And, as I mentioned, most of his childhood friends are rough and still live in the hood.
