Why can't Petrino recruit 4 and 5 stars?

I noticed that Arkansas has 23 commitments so far, and the average star rating for the 23 commitments is 3.0.
Also, they are rated 23rd or 24th in the Rivals rankings.
With the season they had, shouldn't they be able to recruit at a higher level?

Not much state talent to go around nor is it a very big state. Plus, look at their border states. Doesn't help they are surrounded by OU, UT, LSU, OM... and it doesn't help that AU keeps coming in to raid the state.

We'll close on some 4's...
Our season will help next years class..

This, great years, like the hogs this year, reflect on the next recruiting cycle. But it may help flip or convince any uncommitted players this year for sure.

Arkansas recruits are generally not ranked properly since the agencies tend to focus on the major revenue schools and areas of the country that produce a lot of talent. Petrino has some very good talent at Ark don't let the recruiting rankings fool you.

As long as his players keep doing what they're doing, then I don't care about their star ranking.

A lot of that talent is "Nutt" talent.

I'll say this til I'm blue in the face. But if a 4 star guy comes in and isn't developed, he's no better than a 3 star that comes in and is. I happen to feel that Petrino's staff can develop players better than some and/or coach them up.
With that said, the Rivals rankings this year are fricking laughable on at least 2 guys (off the top of my head). You go look at Quinta Funderburke and Mitch Smother's offer lists and tell me they're 3 star players.
Scout has us at #8, I think.

Such as?
Demarcus Love and DJ Williams are only 2 guys I can think of that are close to being irreplaceable. That certainly doesn't SOUND like a ton.

Scout likes Petrino's recruits. #8 class overall there.

This is not really true. There are certainly a few contributors that Nutt brought in, but a majority of this team is Petrino's.

This. Rivals hadn't even sent someone to Arkasnas to evaluate our players until last month and even then they only saw Brey Cook and Brandon Allen. That is just ridiculous. After watching Brandon Allen play one time they immediately bumped him up to the #5 QB and a 4*.

We lead the universe in 5.7 3*'s though!

Demarcus Love
would have never learned to pass block under Markuson

DJ Williams
would have never been the active leader for career yards

location and excellent competition on all sides (esp the nearby states you'd think they would like to recruit like Texas, LA, MS, AL)

I stand corrected. I just assumed that there were more senior contributors on a good team.

quote:Not anymore. On defense only about 3-4 Nutt recruits get any significant playing time now. On offense you can give him Childs, Wright and DJ because they all did technically commit to him but Mallett, Davis, Green, Wingo, Adams, Hamilton and 3 of our 5 OL guys are Petrino recruits.
