I'm bored at extended families and decided to do a somewhat extended look at the matchups in the Egg Bowl. If you don't like what I say, IDGAF.

QB

OM - Masoli has proven this year that he can run and extend plays when the pocket collapses and therefore extend drives.
MSU - Relf is almost a perfect fit in Mullen's perfect offense being a big punishing physical runner (Cam is the only one who could have been better) and has thrown the ball well as of late.
verdict - I give Masoli the slight edge because of his ability to run and throw but it is closer than many would think.

RB
OM - The tandem of Bolden and Jeff Scott are one of the more under rated tandems in the league. Bolden has power and speed and Scott has sprinter type speed.
MSU - Ballard and Perkins are both big power backs that fit perfectly into the scheme of wearing down the defense and churning the clock, but I think they are a product of the system.
verdict - again I give OM the slight edge.

WR

OM - With Melvin Harris out, Summers will have to step up with the defense keying on him. Ja-mes is spotty and Grandy is hurt.
MSU - Bumphis is a great young WR but I just have not been impressed with the other receivers of MSU
verdict - With Harris not playing I call it a wash.

OL
OM - Sowell has turned into a serviceable LT but the line has been riddled with injuries and young.
MSU - One of the better O-lines in the league.
verdict - MSU but the OM line has been playing well as of late.

DL
OM - Powe has come alive the last couple of weeks and we have had some young guys step up but the fact remains we are young/thin at this position. We should be able to stop the inside run but we are slow on the edges.
MSU - One of strengths of the team. Only given up 9 rush TD's a game but only averaging 2.09 sacks a game.
verdict - even

LB
OM - Would be much better here if Lockett was not hurt and Shakelford could be playing LB full time but he splits time between LB and DE. Cornell is serviceable but Walker is consistently out of position.
MSU - White and Wrigjt are both in the top 10 in the SEC in tackles, enough said.
verdict - MSU

DBs
OM - We suck
MSU - They suck
verdict - push

Special Teams

OM - Punter Campell is 2nd in the conference in avg. punt. Kicker Rose is 15-17. KR Grandy and Scott are both electric.
MSU - Punter Hutchins is 10th in the conference in avg. punt. Pasqual is 8 for 9 put is not used much. Bumphis is a pretty good return man.
verdict - Ole Miss

Overall Verdict

Offense - Ole Miss
Defense - MSU
Special Teams - Ole Miss
Final Score 34 - 28 Rebels

My bad, when I was looking at the SEC tackles leaders, Baker was under Wright and I accidentally put him instead.

If MSU had Cam Newton (i.e., if Auburn had not been willing to pay what they wouldn't), State might be 12-0 and heading to Atlanta.

This will be a reverse from last season where OM was playing for bowl position and MSU was playing for pride.

Ole Miss 34

MSU 24

what a homerish "indepth" look:

QB- Masoli throws it a little- Relf runs it a little better. Masoli has 3 times as many turnovers as Relf- that's huge. - Slight lean to Relf

RB- Ballard runs hard- Perkins is the speed back- both offenses run almost identically the same amount of yards per game- Even

OL- State leads the SEC in Time of Possession and grinds away. Mississippi's OL has been surprising- Even

WR's- I agree it's even with your best WR being out

DL- State allows 21 less rushing yards per game and has more tackles for loss- Mississippi has more sacks- Even

LB- State and it isn't even close

DB- State gives up less passing per game, has twice as many INT's, and more passes defensed. And they tackle better- State has the edge

Offense- Even
Defense- State

State wins 38-30

Come on man, did you watch Masoli against LSU, he is a game changer and Relf is not. At worst they are even. We will have to agree to disagree on RB. Trust me MSU's O-line is better this year. We both suck at pass defense but if you want to say yall suck less I'll let you slide, but everything else we have agreed on.

I watched Masoli against Tennessee too...Masoli has 12 picks- Relf has 4...turnovers play a big part in being a QB...Masoli is more high risk/high reward...Relf is steady and keeps grinding you...

RB- Ballard runs for 86/game- Bolden 84...and Ballard didnt play vs UAB when he would have racked up another 150 yards...Not sure how you can say Bolden is better

Pass D- State has given up 16 TD's and has 11 picks...Mississippi has given up 21 TD's and only has 5 picks...Mississippi gives up more ypg than State...what am I missing here?

Basing Masoli on the TN game where he was coming off a concussion and no practice time is just not fair at all. He had 4 picks that game.

I said in my opinion I think the combo of Bolden and Scott is better than Ballard and Perkins. I stress opinion.

What I was saying is that neither are good, I think you would agree with me up to that point, but I will say that MSU is less bad so yes I agree with you.

makes for some interesting pregame chatter anyway...I think we win because our defense is better and on the flip-side Nix cant figure out how to defend the zone read or option game

But it wont be easy at all- and I wont be shocked if we are upset...but I'd really like to go up 11-9 in the last 20

There are a lot of match-ups that are worth watching. I hopes it's a good one.
