well i got through it.....a few holes in your theory are as follows.
1. The SWC needed SMU- back in the hayday arkansas and Texas carried the conference.
2. The SWC collapsed because of the corruption- the swc wasn't financially sound and when tv revenue came into a huge roll, the SWC only had the texas market. it wasn't as appealing as other conferences.
The corruption was rampant but i don't think it was the final say in the collapsing of the conference.

oklahogir,
You are correct. I remember the scandal and there other issues that caused the SWC to fold over on itself and explode. However, to dreaux's point. A HUGE scandal as this one is brewing up to be will have collateral damage across the SEC. It could be tremendously bad for Auburn. But in the end we will all get splattered when it hits the fan.

True. The SWC had no progressive intentions. Frank Broyles was having intermittent impulsive brain spasms of ingenuity at the time and went for it. We had been wanting out for some time, so when the time came for SEC expansion, it was right down our alley. The NCAA was going berserk all over, not only with the SWC, but SMU tended to flaunt it a bit more and got nailed the worst. Of course, as with most breakups, our exes blamed us for the demise.

ETA: If Auburn is found guilty of serious infractions, the NCAA might just go rampantly berserk once again. There could be serious repercussions, and not only in the SEC. It's a fire that's hard to put out.
