Money in cases of paying players is never paid directly by the university. It would be fairly chancy for a university to pay since the books are audited and it might be difficult to cover a payment of $200,000 or so when the auditor asks for the underlying documentation. It would likely be very hard to get the comptroller to put his career on the line to fudge the documents, etc., to cover up. The internal controls for paying out large sums would make such payments risky and hard to cover up. It would also mean that the university officials would be risking jail time for fraud in the misuse of public funds.

It doesn't mean that university officials never commit fraud or misuse university funds, but it would be highly unlikely. Most of these kinds of abuses involve personal gain for the official, and almost always end up in someone getting caught and criminal sanctions.

So if any money changed hands to pay the player, it didn't come from the university.
