So . . . in summary, then, all we know (or all we think we know) is that financially strapped and desperate dad knows he is sitting on a golden goose and decides to go shopping. I've read nothing that seems to indicate that Cam knew anything about the dealings. If true, shame on dad for putting his son in this position and shame on the media for convicting Cam without evidence (anyone remember the Duke Lacrosse team?).

The question then becomes did money, in fact, change hands? I'm sure this will be borne out during the investigation. And if the answer is "yes," I would tend to believe it was done by boosters and not the university proper. Regardless, if so, Auburn, rightly or wrongly, will get slammed by the NCAA with sanctions . . . and the booster or those responsible will get no form of punishment whatsoever.

Money in cases of paying players is never paid directly by the university. It would be fairly chancy for a university to pay since the books are audited and it might be difficult to cover a payment of $200,000 or so when the auditor asks for the underlying documentation. It would likely be very hard to get the comptroller to put his career on the line to fudge the documents, etc., to cover up. The internal controls for paying out large sums would make such payments risky and hard to cover up. It would also mean that the university officials would be risking jail time for fraud in the misuse of public funds.

It doesn't mean that university officials never commit fraud or misuse university funds, but it would be highly unlikely. Most of these kinds of abuses involve personal gain for the official, and almost always end up in someone getting caught and criminal sanctions.

So if any money changed hands to pay the player, it didn't come from the university.

All we know is
A) Cecil's church was in need of repair
B) He asked for an extension of the deadline before the city of Newnan condemned said church
C) In his request for extension he said he would have the money soon
D) The repairs (about $50,000 worth) were made ahead of the deadline
E) MSU made a report to the SEC (and later the NCAA) saying there were some issues regarding Cam's recruitment to MSU.

Everything else past that is either conjecture, rumor, innuendo, hearsay, or from unnamed "sources".

As I've said in the past, if Auburn did something wrong I want head to roll. But right now there is nothing concrete to say the Newtons (includingCecil) did anything wrong. If there are tapes, let us hear some fo them - and not just edited portions that can be twisted one way or another the whole things. Just because Rogers went on the radio with his lawyer advising him doesn't mean he spoke the truth. People lie with their lawyer next to them in many cases.
