I think the potential conference expansion by Big 10 and Pac 10 could shake things up and going to that 4 team plus one would work.
Realistically, most years, when you have several unbeatens or several one loss teams, a top four would produce a solid champion. Even in years where you have a solid top two you would still challenge those two teams.
Problem is it has to be a level playing field, if one conference has a title game, all conferences should.
