But they were/are consistent in using the same formula for voting the national championship: After all the bowl games and recognized by the conferences of the FBS.
Even if the end results are not the same (i.e. 2003 or any difference in computer vs. human polls) these "rules" have been accepted and approved by all 119 schools in the FBS.
I'm sure the Helms Athletic Foundation was recognized and approved by all conferences...

The AP was part of the accepted formula in 2003, thus, using that argument, there was a split then and not a "true" winner.
