See, if I was an Auburn fan, I wouldn't claim 1983. Because the wire service standard had been established at that point. A single publication or group wouldn't bear the same weight as the AP or UPI.
But I'm also not going to go back now, in the BCS era, and mock championships awarded by the AP or UPI, because those WERE the standards used at the time. In fifteen years, we will have another standard to award the NC. Will LSU or Florida's BCS titles then be dismissed as being "irrelevant BCS garbage that nobody should claim"....?

The difference between now and the pre-BCS situation is that the polls awarded the #1 spot and different times, under varying methods (sports writers, individual statisticians, etc.)
