News and notes: Saban touts 'a huge improvement' in passing game as LSU looms

By Gentry Estes, Mobile Press-Register

November 05, 2009

Will wide receiver Marquis Maze and Alabama's passing attack be more explosive against LSU on Saturday?

When it comes to his passing offense, Alabama coach Nick Saban is pointing to "a huge improvement" in two weeks of practices leading up to Saturday's 2:30 p.m. game against LSU.

"We've worked hard on the passing game, and it shows," Saban said. "I think our players are playing with more confidence now. (Quarterback) Greg (McElroy) has done a really good job of getting the ball out of his hand on time, and I think that we've improved on pass protection."

Saban has stressed that he wants the Crimson Tide's offense to attempt more throws downfield and test the middle of the field against LSU. Alabama went the month of October without a completed pass longer than 27 yards.

The only improvement yall could make is if you scrapped it and just ran the ball.

First pass gets picked off. I call it now. These types of news releases never work out on the field.

I love when a team forces itself to do something it's not good at. It takes a lot of pressure off of the opponent. Namely: us.

Uh what about accuracy? This is his most glaring weakness. What about decision making? I could get the pass off in time, but making an accurate throw to the right guy, while under pressure... that's way different.

I'm not buying it. Maze is back, but McElroy is still throwing it to him.

That's exactly what he meant . . .

Look for a lot of play action against LSU and they will look to get Jordan Jefferson.

This wreaks of gamesmanship. If 'Bama comes out throwing then I'll have to rethink my prediction of a 31-10 'Bama win......I understand a diverse offense is theoretically every defenses worst nightmare, but a 80% run, 20% pass ratio is what you want against us.

Hell, at this point I'll take Fluker running routes. I don't know how soft his hands are, but it'd be tough for GMac to miss him.

Coachspeak.

Saban and Alabama want to run it down our throat, around the end, and back down our throat.

He would prefer LSU play soft and read.

And we'll see if Chavis wants to accomodate.

Saban knows what he would do to his offense based on its shortcomings, and is convincing himself and his team they can do what is necessary to overcome that gameplan.

We're going to stack the box and dare McElroy to throw it. Pressure on the QB will be key along with an outstanding performance from our secondary. Stacking the box leaves the corners man coverage. If we can rattle him early were in good shape. If however, he completes a few we will have to soften the defense.
