Alabama in 2010 - An In-depth Breakdown

Out of my own curiousity, and now that we know who is playing where, I figured it would be cool to look at next years team.
Hear are the Seniors we are losing. If a player is in bold he is a starter.

Now, let's take a look what players we have to fill the holes that are being left behind.
Defense
Obviously, the defense takes the biggest hit, but luckily that's also where we have the most depth and tons of talent.
The biggest area of loss comes across the DL. Losing Cody, Deaderick, and Washington is no small thing. However, we do have several players who have already emerged and are already getting considerable playing time both this year and some from last year.
Josh Chapman NT SO
Said to be the strongest player on the team, he backed up Cody considerably last year on third downs and started a couple of games for TC was out with an injury. He is no 6-5 355, but at 6-1 305 he's a definite force. I really don't see a ton of drop off at this position.
Marcell Dareus DE SO
Marcell proved he is going to be a player. He was very impressive in the offseason, and some thought he might end up a starter. But it's hard to take spots from Seniors like Deaderick and Washington who have game experience. Well Marcel got quite a bit in the VT game since he started over Deaderick due to Deaderick's injury. And he showed what everyone had been raving about. He recorded 1.5 sacks and would have had a forced fumble if the McClain incident hadn't occurred. This guy is going to be dominant and will get tons of PT this year.
Luther Davis Defensive Line JR
Davis has played in 21 games and well have played in probably 33 by time the season is over. He is an extremely solid player and should be a senior leader for the DL going into next season.
Nick Gentry Defensive Line SO
Played in 10 games last season, and will probably get a lot of playing time this year as well.
Darrington Sentimore Defensive Line FR
A very talented freshman who has already worked himself into the 3 deep chart this year. He may see some playing time this year.
Kerry Murphy Defensive Line FR
A freshman, but at 6-4 323 and a little bit older due to going to Hargrave, Murphy should provide promising future on the DL alongside Sentimore. He has worked his way into the 3 deep for this season.
When it comes to the Linebackers, the biggest question is will McClain return. He has made statements over the summer that he very well may. But nothing is for certain, and I'm sure that is a discussion for December. If he does, the tandem of McClain and Hightower will be even more impressive next year, if that's possible.
If he does leave, IMO he will most likely be replaced by...
Nico Johnson Linebacker FR 6-3/225
A very talented 5 star freshman who has worked is way into the three deep. I imagine he will see some playing time this year and could very well be as good as McClain was in his first season. However, Chris Jordan is going to have a ton to say about whether Nico wins that job.
Eryk Anders was the best pass rusher for the Tide last year, and anbody that saw #32 chasing Tyrod around the backfield all night this past Saturday would say he probably is going to have a much bigger year than last. However, at 6-2 227, he is not the prototypical player for the Jack Postion. Courtney Upshaw who will be a Junior at 6-2 249 should be able to step into this role by next season without any drop-off.
Cory Reamer is not one of the biggest playmakers on the Tides D, but he is consistent and doesn't make many mistakes. There is no obvious replacement for him next season, but there is a ton of talent to choose from. I imagine Jerrel Harris, Tana Patrick, Atchison, and Chavis Williams and probably a few others will all be fighting for the job. If Bama can find a sound replacement for Reamer, there shouldn't be much drop off here either.
You can't replace a Javier Arenas, his devotion, intensity, leadership, and playmaking ability are a rare combo. Other than if McClain leaves, he will be the most sorely missed on the Tide's D. However, there is a player emerging that could end up being a great one and that is Dre 5 Star Freshman Dre Kirpatrick. Dre has already been seen as a favorite of Sabans and has done very well in the fall camp. I imagine he will see some considerable playing time in the nickle and dime this season. And may break the two deep as the season continues. He's ability and height at 6-3 for a CB is extremely rare, he just needs time to learn the defense and mature. BJ Scott is also a very talented player that will be a junior and battling for this spot as well. The number one CB in the nation, 5 star incoming freshman Demarcus Milliner will probably be providing backup.
Justin Woodall is emerging this season as a very solid Safery, but so is starter Mark Barron and backup Robby Green. These two had a very heated battle in the off season for the starting job at the other safety position, with Green leading in the beginning, but Barron winning it in the end. Green has already seen considerable playing time in the VT game and should see alot more. I imagine next season he will line up next to Barron and we shouldn't see any drop off. And the talented head hunter freshman Rod Woodson should see some PT this season, and emerge to take Green's Position in the Nickle and Dime Packages next year. But quality incoming Freshman Jarrick Williams and Nick Perry may want to get a piece of that action as well.
The talent on defense should be nearly as good next year as this year, but will be a little inexperienced in some positions. The big thing they will be lacking is leaders with Arenas leaving and possibly McClain, but Hightower and Kareem Jackson should take over those roles nicely. All and all, I see the 2010 defense being comparable with 2008's, possibly better if McClain returns.

Offense
The Tides offense in 2010 should be one of the best Alabama fans have seen in quite some time. With only 3 starters not returning, a quality QB(McElroy) returning for his senior year, a phenom WR(Jones) playing as a Junior, a dominant RB (Ingram) with a 5 Star Backup(Richardson), an experienced OL, and quality WRs (Maze, Hanks) to take some pressure of Jones, the Tides Offense looks to be a force in 2010.
The Offensive line will take the biggest hit by losing 2 senior starters (LG Mike Johnson and RT Drew Davis), and you could say all of it if you include TE Colin Peek.
But the biggest loss out of this three will most likely be Colin Peek. Although having only played one game for the Tide after sitting out a year due to transferring from GT, Peek has already proven to be NFL talent. His combonation of Blocking and Receiving skills will be missed. But the two freshman...

Mike Johnson will be the biggest loss on the Line as he heads off for the NFL, but there is a ton of talent to replace him, and most of that talent will have considerable PT by next season. It's pretty much going to be a plug and play situation with the amount of talent in the OL depth chart and I'm not going to even try to speculate as to who will end up where. But there its a possibility we may see DJ Fluker the freshman beast earn the RT spot or the highly sought Tyler Love. Brian Motley, John Micheal Boswell, David Ross, and Chance Warmack, who will all have considerable PT by then, will be fighting for the inside positions. Let's just say the Depth at the Line is going to be impressive, and there should be very little drop-off anywhere, and much improvement as whole compared to this years group due to more experience.
Well, there's my breakdown. I truly think the 2010 team my end up being just as good or better than this years team. Sure the Defense will drop off some, but the Offense should pick up drastically. And I imagine we will see the most talented "Balanced" Crimson Tide we have seen in a long time.

All I know is the with those defensive players leaving Bama must witness some vast improvements on Offense, considering the deadly threat of flipping field position due to Arenas will also be missed.
Don't think the Power run will be near sufficient. QB development this year is key, that and hoping Hanks really does stand out as a contributing #2 WR.

I'm going to respectfully disagree. I think Mike Johnson is going to be a huge loss. He's shown all kinds of leadership and has been a rock on the offensive line, playing multiple positions as needed. I'm gonna hate to see him go, almost more than Andre. He's done a fantastic job given the tasks handed to him.

I think our defense will not be as good as this year due to inexperience, but what do I know.
Offense should be better, there is no doubt. They would need to control the ball and provide some rest for their teammates.

I won't say 100 % never, but I would find it highly unlikely for us to get away from a run first offense.

As far as Mike Johnson goes, he will be sorely missed due to his leadership and talent. But I was looking at it more as who will be the hardest to replace talent and experience wise out of the three with what backups we have. And Peek is backed up by two freshman. But yes Johnson is the heart of the OL this year, hopefully someone else will emerge as that next year.

Kareem Jackson, junior cb..... there have been whispers he could leave early. He has the speed and size but just needs to show more consistency. Against VTech we saw the Jackson from freshman year.
