The never "pulled out" because they were never "in". The BCS didn't have any kind of contractual agreement with the AP, the BCS was just using their rankings. Then the AP said "no, you can't use them anymore"

At least that's how I remember it, if anyone knows better please correct me.

Yes, that is exactly what happened. The AP never had any agreement with the BCS, and after the 2004 season the AP told the BCS to stop using their rankings. But, I didn't say anything in response to him because, I figured, why bother arguing with an idiot?
