I dont know how all of you are about this, but Orel Hershieser just was talking about how D1 College baseball teams only have 11.7 scholarships. The ole baseball coach at Mississippi State, Ron Polk always complained at the NCAA about this. ESPN showed a graphic on this showing that Ice Hockey gets 18 scholarships WTF. Im going to stop Venting. The SEC baseball coaches should come together to come up with a plan of raising the number of baseball scholarships to at least 18 or 20.

the ncaa fricks baseball so much its not even funny. If they would stop fricking it over baseball would gain more support

Agree that something should be done. Not up to the coaches though. The college presidents are in charge.

there are 25 players on the travel roster, what do you all think should be the number of scholarships ? 18? 20? More less

Scott Berry, he is the pitching/associate head coach. He was named the head coach for next year back in late April.

well 1st, they should get rid of the roster restrictions they have. Put it back to the way it was, then give out 18 scholarships. That's 8 position players + 5 pitchers + 5 extras. Seems fair to me

I think the sport deserves something comparable to the other sports as to roster/scholarship ratio. At MSU, players get about a 1/3 scholarship at the most. We are at a disadvantage because surrounding states (Tennessee, Louisiana, Georgia - not sure about Alabama) give other scholarships on top of what the baseball program can do. I think if it was up to the SEC school presidents, they would do what is needed. There are 311 division baseball programs. Probably 275 of those programs lose money on baseball. It won't change anytime soon.

Its a cash thing. The 'AA dosen't give out more baseball scholarships because the sport as a whole generates little money.

quote:I care. I would like to see more of the high school kids choose college over going pro. The pro draft especially wants the pitchers because the colleges use up pitchers' arm before they even get to the pros (look at what Bianco did to Pomeranz over the last several weeks - think McDonald at LSU). If more of the really good pitchers choose college over pro, there would be pitchers enough so they don't get used and abused. Plus - I love college baseball. I could give a rip about MBL baseball.

cry all u want - it is not going to happen - sport is growing like never before! if u increased schollies, LSU, etc, would get the better players & u would not have the parity u have now
some schools, such as Southern , because of money, does not even fund the entire 11.7 and that also includes notre dame - sport is great now !

polk didnt bitch bc of scholarships
he bitched bc he was stuck in mississippi and states like louisiana and georgia had state scholarship programs that allowed the teams to use to their advantage
lsu can take kids who are on tops, and only give them what they need for room and board, and then use the other scholarships for other players that are out of state or wouldnt qualify for tops

I would think LSU folks would be able to discuss baseball in a more knowledgeable manner. Oh well.

It's actually a Title IX thing.
