It's sad Saban is exploiting the Graduate Assistant position to better his team. And then using the race card to back his position saying we should do more to develop minority coaches.
It just shows Saban will bend any rule he can to win at any cost.
I hope the NCAA comes down hard on Bama and Saban.

Alabama, elite programs sneaking in coaching experience at GA level

Groh, 37, spent the past eight seasons as an assistant coach at Virginia. From 2006-08, he served as offensive coordinator. During a December staff shakeup, Virginia head coach Al Groh fired his son. The younger Groh landed at Alabama, but not as an assistant coach. This season, he'll be a graduate assistant.
quote:
"Personally, I'd like to see us be allowed to have more GAs on the field to be able to develop coaches," Saban said. "I think we should be doing more to develop minority coaches, and I think that's one of the ways you could do it. ... We seem to take no responsibility for that in the NCAA. We're much more about restricting size."

So why bash just saban and alabama. are you hoping no one reads the article and realizes that many schools do the same? or are you just a lsu supporter who takes every opportunity to bash saban?

All of the above. I'm just highlighting the article which centers around Saban's actions. My take is the University Presidents are trying to keep College Football from becoming bigger then what it already is. And then there are coaches like NIck Saban who are pushing the envelop at every opportunity to make College Football like the NFL. Yes, it comes from the pressure to win now or be fired. If the NCAA and college presidents don't push back on the manipulation of rules quickly it can all get out of control very fast.
I would much rather see coaches like Saban be part of the solution then push the envelop the way he is which causes a big divide in the haves and have nots. Everyone can see what he's doing to get around the rules.

Oh that's right, we are waiting to hear what the new NCAA sanctions will be against Bama aren't we? I

Bama takes sanctions like a good Catholic takes communion.

I hope LA Tiger and tentex both stub their toes REAL bad in the dark tonight.

If letting Al Groh's joke of a son coach your players is cheating than let him cheat all day long. Also, how long has Groh's kid been a minority?

I've stubbed my toe less often than Bama's been on probation.

My problem with it is him playing the race card to try to support his position of basically having an army of GA's to get around the NCAA rules. That is all he is doing and that is fine except throwing in the race part is BS. If he wants more minority coaches, he can hire some. He is in charge so it is pretty simple.

I understand rules and think that every University should follow the same rules. What I don't understand is why the NCAA doesn't enforce the same rules for everyone. I think that when rules are broken at different Universities , they usually fall under similar catagories, such as giving money, giving extra benefits, etc. Why doesn't the NCAA just set up the following punishments: This is the punishment for giving money, this is the punishment for lack of control, etc. Then everyone would receive the same treatment. No, what they do is let schools like USC get away with murder for how many years now, and they just keep investigating it, hoping that everyone will just forget how serious it was, and if they give any punishment at all it will be little. If you set a rule, shouldn't you already have the exact punishment laid out for breaking that rule? They just have too much power and I personally think that they're being influenced by certain people.

He's not breaking the rules here. He's bending them to his benefit. This is what you have to do to make a strong program in the SEC. The SEC and NCAA may respond by making a rule about it, but until then it's kosher. While I don't like it as a Tiger, I do admire it. In the same way I admire Napoleon. You remember the short megalomaniac that almost conquered Europe before his empire crumbled.
