LSU +A

LSU got who they wanted. The last few teams he’s been involved with have improved due to his influence, including Ole Miss’s potential entry into the CFP. As a HC, he has won conference and Division titles. He has an aura which will attract talent to LSU.

Florida -A

Sumrall

Florida missed out on Kiffin, their number one target. So, any other hire would be a disappointment.

Yet, with Sumrall, they get a defensive minded coach who’s successfully dealt with staff turnover.

He’s been successful at both Troy and Tulane, winning conference titles and reaching the conference championship every year.

He was believed to be either the first or second choice for several other programs.

Auburn +B

Sumrall seemed to be their first choice, especially given his defensive orientation.

Alex Golesh has led USF to three consecutive winning seasons and two bowl victories.

He’s an offensive coach who calls his own plays, which, given Auburn’s most recent coaches, may give fans heartburn.

All the same, he is said to have been Tennessee’s most accomplished OC under Josh Heupel.

Arkansas -B

They thought they had Golesh under contract, only to see that slip away.

At Memphis, he won four bowl games.

He is the greatest mystery of all the selected coaches.

But I think Golesh may turn out a better hire than Sumrall

If it works it works. What’s the case for Sumrall over Golesh?

I rate these hires worse than most every year using the below criteria.

A - Wow hire that I’m somewhat surprised the school was able to pull off. (Example that worked: Saban to Bama, Example that didn’t: Jimbo Fisher to A&M)

B - Hire makes sense (Good: Kirby to UGA or Urban to Florida, Bad: Mullen to Florida)

C - Hire makes some sense, but I’d expect a little more from that program (Good: Heupel to UT, Bad: Derek Mason to Vandy)

D - Hire seems lazy or doesn’t make much sense (Good: Chizik to Auburn, Bad: Harsin to Auburn)

F - WTF, they should do better hire (somewhat Good: Coach O to LSU, Bad: Joe Moorhead to State)

So I’d go:
A - LSU - It is rare to get an active head coach with winning experience at a big time program. Even more so from the same conference. I gave the BK hire an A too though, and like BK, Kiffin has flameout potential.

B - Auburn - Golesh makes a lot of sense. He’s done well at a USF program that was a disaster before he arrived and uses a scheme that seems to have a high floor. It may not have a national title ceiling though.

C - Florida - Sumrall has a good track record, but similar to Napier, I think he has been at programs that are some of the better ones in their division. I think UF should be able to pull sitting P4 coaches like a Dillingham.

D - Arkansas - Silverfield has been very mid in an American that is much weaker than it used to be. Memphis should be the best program in the current American.

Curiously, I’d say more hires end up working out of the B group than the A group, but A hires are pretty rare.

Grading hires is a way of grading the admin.

I think most SEC programs should be disappointed that the money gap between the SEC and Big XII/ACC hasn’t resulted in being able to easily pull coaches from those conferences.

because those coaches don’t have a gauntlet to make the playoffs

7-5 Duke is in the accg

Florida is a 4-8 team and we road graded fsu (no shade but idk how they beat yall)

We’re a shite team in the sec but like a 7 win team in the ACC

Honestly if I could I’d have UF join the ACC because it’s easier and we might make the playoffs once every 10-15 years or so
But in the sec our ceiling is Gasparilla Bowl. Why leave asu to come here? We’re a shite program…
That tv money doesn’t mean shite when the admin wants to be cheap
