Well, it didn't help that A&M was in the same division as the team that was dominating college football for a decade, and another that was winning national championships when the other wasn't.

We had the great fortune to enter the SEC West during peak Bama dominance of college along with some very good LSU teams.
SECw was a freaking gauntlet for the first 7-8 years and it peaked it 2019 with that LSU team. The next year we had a very good team but COVID and media bias of Ohio State kept us out of the playoffs. That and the late season rule change if the B10 to allow Ohio State to go.
