Why did OSU go down so far so fast?

Here's my take, the cowboy program went belly up when it was no longer joined at the hip to Sooner football.
Here's a look at the downward spiral of OSU football from when they had OU on the schedule to when they did not.
OSU's W-L record
2023 10-4 includes a loss to Texas in the Big 12 CCG and a win over A&M in their bowl game
2024 3-9
2025 1-10 Gundy fired after a 1-2 start, Pokes likely 1-11 after Saturday
We've always said the OU game was their big one, the one that drove ticket sales as you could only get an OU @ OSU game ticket by purchasing the full season package.
When Oklahoma left for the SEC there was an attempt to have the two teams continue to play as OOC opponents but as I understand, OSU turned it down.
Interest in OSU football nosedived as a result.

Everything you said is true. But to me the downfall started when Gundy was unfairly called out by a player for wearing an OANN shirt. The admin made him apologize bent the knee. At that moment the players had all the control and Gundy cared a lot less.
What needed to happen is no apology and state it was simply a tshirt grabbed to go fishing. Then it dies down. And if any players still had a problem they can be dismissed from team.
To me thats when it all started to unravel.

Good hire. Most times there’s bitterness when your coach moves on before season is over and schools don’t allow coach to finish. But they are letting him finish it, good on them.

Gundy checked out because of NIL and portal. Team quit when he did.
