Some OU fans are using the phrase "Playoffs or bust" ahead of the LSU game.

While it is true in one sense, the OU standard is to win championships; on the other hand, there are seasons that represent making strides to meet that standard.

This is one of them, regardless of Saturday's outcome. BV is the guy.

Not saying his seat should be warm or anything, but winning masks A LOT of things (winning is the goal after all). But process over results in the long haul is going to lead to more consistent results.

Offense aside, I'm left scratching my head after a some of these games and coaching decisions he makes.

Many OU fans seem to expect perfection, but I don't understand the significance of 'bust' in this context other than the obvious: win and we are in. Lose and we are out.

Also: I'm only on one cup of coffee so far. I'll come back to this thread when I'm awake.

What would be great is to finish the season with a better record than saxet.

We’ve been in the playoffs for our last 3 games and Sat is playoff game 4. Had we lost any of the prior 3 games we’re out.

Assuming we win Sat, and with no first round bye we’ll only be halfway there. We’d have to play 4 more playoff games to win the title.

There is way more parity now with NIL and insta transfers via portal.

For OU to win title we’d have to win 8 games in a row with 7 of the 8 being vs ranked teams.

Tenn ranked
Bama ranked
Mizzou ranked
LSU unranked
P1 ranked
P2 ranked
P3 ranked
P4 ranked

All playoff teams will be ranked games. If we can get to the title game it would be one of the better runs looking at schedule. Keep in mind we had 4 ranked at-the-time games before the Tenn game (Michigan/Auburn/tx/Ole Miss).

So if we make and win title we’d have played and beat 11 ranked at the time games this season. That would measure up to any season.

Having said that - and because of the level of teams we’ve played - if we can get to playoffs thats a major achievement. And doing it without a lot of offense lately.

What BV is doing is quite amazing when one looks at how much more challenging it is these days compared to before.

I am not. No coach is perfect. I mean every one loved Lanning and he made boneheaded calls in title games.

For me, the players really are the ones out there playing and implementing the coaching they have gotten. Hell, Stoops used say, "We aren't out there playing."

If we had an offense, the few coaching decision mistakes would not be so glaring. I

Fair enough. I was reading a few other forums (Brainacs LOL) and a YouTube HOF podcast with fans in the chat implying that if BV loses this game, blow it up, fire all and start over. That is how I understood that phrase by OU fans.

Ah, gotcha.

Well - I was one who wanted NOTHING to do with Venables as HC. I didn't believe he was even close to HC material at a place like OU. But this year I am changing my mind - based only on how the defense is playing this year and the fact we are 9-2 at this point in the season.

Brent still has many faults, although he can learn from mistakes and overcome them. However.. he needs to do something about the offense. He used up all his leeway/grace period with that Littrell promotion last year. If we lose this weekend, or lose early in the playoffs, it will be because of the offense. I'm not saying we should be expected to reach the final but we've been watching this mickey-mouse offense all year and it's just not a good fit for the defense. A couple little adjustments here or there would be fantastic, but Arbuckle doesn't seem to be up to the task. Just my opinion, but Cam Ward made Arbuckle look like an "offensive guru" and we got sold a bill of goods.

So - maybe that "playoffs or bust" mantra started before the season, and they are sticking with it? Not sure. I don't visit Brainiacs very often.

Well those fans are stupid then. 2 years ago we got to 10-3. Things were looking up. Then Lebby left and we hired Seth as OC and the wheels fell off. In addition we had more injuries than you can shake a stick at. Bad hire plus injuries and we ended up 6-7 but had 3-4 winnable games. Then we hire Arbuckle and things look good until injury to Mateer. Yet we somehow have clawed our way into playoff contention.

BV has built a great culture and the future looks great. Look at all these schools firing and hiring. They will spend way more money on new coaches and paying off fired ones. That will limit their NIL money to pay recruits and players to stay.

What BV will give us is great defense and program stability. In the long run that pays off over constant hiring and firing. I think BV has done a really good job. He has made some mistakes on hiring but he admits it and tries to make better decisions.

Having a great D is an equalizer to rough O. Defense travels whereas Offense gets shut down in big games look at all the offense we had prior to BV and it got us no titles. We had the best run of QBs and offense in history and it always got stopped by a good defense.

My take is we tried the great offensive strategy for almost 2 decades and it got us wins but no big hardware. I want to give BV a decade to see what defense can give us. We have some good O players coming in. We have 2 freshmen pillars on OLine to build on. We have a really good QB coming in. We can spend some money on O holes. Improve Offense to go with this Defense and skies the limit.

I hate people wanting to fire so hastily. We are just beginning to reap the rewards of what BV can do. Its not the time to change it, no matter how we finish. We’re going to put a lot of D players in NFL and that will keep the D recruit pipeline going. Make Offensive improvements and presto we’re in business.

And if we do get in playoffs I would not discount making a run. Our D can slow down any team. Its an equalizer.

I hear ya. Yet there are reports from a few different sources that BV tried to fire Seth Litt and was told NO. Also, reports that BV was loking to hire GT OC, but Administration said he can't bring his coaches because they weren't going to pay for the buyouts of BB DM JJF et al...just saying.

I told others in 2022, that perhaps BV is more Harbaugh and Dabo in that it may take 5-8 years to win a natty as opposed to the King and Bob.

I agree, if we stick with Brent we have some good chances ahead. Change coach and now you start over - thats how you become Nebraska.

What BV had to overcome from how bad Riley left it is amazing. Some fans only look at records but not what the coach started with.

Bob left Riley a title team and he pissed it away. That short kick before half vs GA ended up losing game (along with other bad decisions). Then each year got worse.

Riley left BV a team in shambles. And BV has flipped that first year rebuild into a potential playoff berth.

Hold on, Hunter - you're an OU fan? For some reason I thought you were a LSU fan. What brought you here in 2017?

Yes I've seen that rumor about wanting the GT OC and the admin wouldn't go forward with it. Wouldn't surprise me. But since Nagy is on board now and involved in the decision-making, I bet (hope?) we don't have an issue like that going forward.

After the Ole Miss game, I was keeping my fingers crossed to win 1 of the last 4, with 2 of the last 4 being orgasmic. Now, I feel like the season will be a major disappointment if LSU wins on Saturday (a very real possibility).

Damned fickle OU fans!!!!!!!!

I am hoping we can put some offense together. Hearing Tatum is healthy too.

And this is a major achievement knowing who we faced this year. We need to establish a run game Sat

Methinks all thought should only be on this one opponent. The "or bust" part introduces a possibility of negativity, es no bueno.

PMA only!

Narrow the mind-set to taking care of this week's business. There is nothing else. This week's opponent still has a talent-laden roster so ignore their other issues, 'cause they got ballplayers.

It would just be a feeling. OU played that schedule with half a team and will have won 9/12.

Coaches and staff? Yes, 100%

Me? Nah, nothing I post will change anything about the game Sat. If we lose its not my fault and if we win its not my fault.

But yes, our coaches need to be dialed in LSU has a salty defense.
