FEI - CFP Team Rating Profiles

- It doesn't matter a ton right now, but A&M's resume is pretty clearly the #1 resume in the country. The top of their resume vs OSU/Indiana is even, but the depth of it is light years better.

- Oregon is 2-1 vs Top 50

- Notre Dame is 1-2 vs the Top 30 and 3-2 vs Top 50

- Georgia Tech is 1-0 vs Top 50 and hasn't played a single game vs a team in the Top 40

Yeah, this FEI ranking seems pretty useless. It produces wacky results, such as:

Oregon 3
Utah 5
Notre Dame 6

Their ratings aren't wins and losses, it's like SP+ - how good a team is based on analysis of their stats curved by who they played.

Based off a Curve. And this curve thinks beating Penn State is a phenomenal feat.

It looks like voodoo analysis to me.
Oregon’s best win so far is vs Iowa.

Penn State is #22 - right around Illinois, Texas, Michigan, Auburn and LSU. Which is probably about right.

Penn State has lost 5 games by a combined 16 pts - all of which were games lost on the last possession of the game. And lost @ Ohio State by 24.

They aren't a great team, but they aren't a terrible team either - just because they have 6 losses.

FEI isn't ranking them based on wins and losses.

In FEI's "ranking based off wins and losses" (Strength of Record), Oregon is #7, 10 or 13 based on which scale you are looking at.

You’re describing Auburn or Arkansas results

Correct - and Auburn and Arkansas are not "good", but nobody is excited to go play on the road at either place because they've both proven to be fully capable of giving elite teams a game down to the wire. Because they aren't terrible teams.

#22 Penn State
#24 Auburn

Arkansas is lower (#39) because unlike Penn State and Auburn they've played some absolute stinker games that drug them down.

Maybe it’s me being confused by these numbers in the FEI RK column:

Oregon 3
Utah 5
Notre Dame 6

FEI Rank is their main rankings - it's "how good a team are you" and it generally equates to Vegas Odds, which don't care about how many losses you have they care about how good you are. You could be 1-11 and if you played 12 Top 30 teams and they were all close games you are going to be ranked pretty high.

The last 3 columns (Strength of Record) doesn't care if you win by 1 or 100, it just cares who you played (how good they are) and if you won or lost.

It’s absolutely not anything how a normal person watching football would rank teams

But it surely cannot reflect how good a team those teams are…

A 5th grader can tell you that

Auburn is 5-6. They are playing 9-2 Alabama. They are less than a touchdown underdog.

North Carolina is 4-6. If they played Alabama on Saturday they would be a 3-4 touchdown underdog.

Auburn is #24
North Carolina is #94

And Yet you can’t explain how Oregon deserves a 3 rank, or Utah deserves a 5 rank
