From yesterday. With 99% of threads about coaches how about all these teams firing them just play without one.

129 years ago today: OU football won its first game in program history with a 12-0 win over Norman High School in Oklahoma City.

OU had no coach that season, as former head coach John Harts left to go prospecting for gold in the Arctic.

A little more than 130 years ago, John Harts stood in Bud Risinger’s Norman barbershop and declared, “Let’s get up a football team.”

Harts’ words — which marked the genesis of what became OU’s football program — have long been known, thanks to the research of legendary Sooners Sports Information Director Harold Keith.

But the location of Risinger’s shop had been lost to time.

Until Bryce Jones’ research finally unearthed the location earlier this year as OU looked to commemorate 100 years of Gaylord Family — Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

Thursday, in front of what is now InkFire Ramen Tapas and Bar at 121 E. Main in Norman, an historical marker was dedicated at the location where Harts started the process of creating the football program in September 1895.

“Six words that changed the trajectory of our university, this community, our state, and the true feeling of Oklahoma,” OU athletic director Joe Castiglione said. “He said. ‘Let’s get up a football team,’ and though our first coach, Coach Harts, he really didn’t enjoy the immense success that the program would earn over many, many decades to follow, but this was history nonetheless.

Harts coached the Sooners for just one season — one game, a 34-0 loss to Oklahoma City on Dec. 14, 1895 in a field at the intersection of Boyd Street and Elm Avenue.

I wonder how many beers John had when he said that.

Quite a different time. They only had 12 uniforms (poor and no NIL) and anytime they subbed they had to change on the spot to give oncoming player the uniform. The game was way different back then. Most players played both sides and rarely subbed.

If those players could see what the game is now they’d never have believed it. These were trailblazers. OU had football before we were even a state. Nov 16, 1907 was statehood.

Combination barbershop and ramen bar sounds like a bad idea. How would you keep the hair out of the soup?

129 yrs later and Norman HS is still just +10 in a hypothetical matchup.

Jk... that is pretty cool. Thanks for sharing.

Great post, always love a good history lesson. Both the barbershop epiphany and the prospecting gold in the arctic detail cracked me up, such a different time.

It's not bad. Not quite at Tamashii's or Tatsumaki's level, but pretty good

Ole Miss fans were just here...

But for those other SEC fans who come to Norman...

Campus corner is the main hub for activities...

But downtown (where the Barbershop/Raman place is) is about a half mile away and is kind of interesting because it still kind of has that "old west main street" feel to it.

Just down the block from this historic building is "The Diner" which is the oldest continuously operating restaurant restaurant in Norman. It has been open in some form as a restaurant for over 100 years. Good breakfast and is famous for chili.

Anymore, most visiting fans hang out in OKC a lot of the time when they are here... And campus corner is the hub of action on game day... but old downtown, Norman is also worth checking out for anybody who comes to town.
