After a frustrating career at the University of Texas, sophomore running back Jerrick Gibson has left the program. This comes just days after after he received one carry for -3 yards against rival Oklahoma in Texas’ 23-6 victory.
This move allows him to preserve his redshirt for his next stop.
For the season he accumulated 152 yards and one touchdown on 37 carries. This came after what was at times a promising freshman year where he had 377 yards and four touchdowns on 78 carries.
Snaps were hard to come by with the return of Tre Wisner and emergence of James Simon and Christian Clark as competing options. Though he was highly ranked in the 2024 class, and heavily prioritized by former Texas running backs coach, Tashard Choice, Gibson was unable to find solid footing on Austin, with fumbles being a primary issue.
At 5-2, and CJ Baxter still ailing and missing practice, the Horns will have a three man rotation between Wisner, Clark, and Simon.

I'd rather Simon get those snaps, so I'm okay with this, but our RB depth could get scary pretty quick.
Wisner
* Baxter
Simon
Clark
Niblett
Stewart (Redshirt)
I wonder if there are any young guys who aren't playing much that could switch positions and get some reps in practice.
Michael Terry
Cunningham
We need to use that scholarship on a good portal RB next year, especially if Baxter and Wisner both leave.

I think we are counting on keeping Baxter out as long as possible, but I hope not.
I understand the fumbling issues with Gibson, but I think it was probably because he didn't get a single touch against Florida when he's from Gainesville. Bucky made a solid point about that last week on TSU.
Jonah Williams could play RB if he wanted to.
We also have the #1 RB in the country still coming here we hope. So, some veteran personnel would be great to go with him.

Good point on the Florida game. That makes sense.
Baxter really should come back unless he just goes into beast mode the rest of the season. Then again, RB's have a shelf life and perhaps it's better to start working towards that 2nd contract.
Wisner should stay imo. I'm a big fan and I love the way he plays, but I'm not sure his game translates to the NFL.
Wisner, Baxter (or portal), Simon, Cooper is a nice RB room next year.

I didn't mean it in a way like we are trying to get rid of Baxter. I meant, we want Baxter to be healthy because he has an impact when he's on the field. He's our best pass pro back too and legit can take the load off Wisner.

Yes, that is the way I took your comment, and I agree. I was just saying that he really should come back next year.
