Question about Reveille and the eye patch

Did they not suture the eye closed at the time of the enucleation, or Is the eye patch just a game day thing for aesthetics?
I have a cat with one eye. She showed up as a half-dead kitten with a ruptured eyeball and other ailments. When the vet did the enucleation, he put in a prosthetic to keep her eyelid from sinking in, and then sutured the eye socket closed.
How did Reveille lose the eye? Injury or infection?
