whats the scoop on back up

Michael Hawkins Jr. Speedy and can do damage after escaping the pocket. Passing is a mystery, cuz last year with no line nor receivers, he didn't get many chance and had some turnovers. This season has only been clean up time.

Everyone is saying it was a successful surgery on Wednesday. At the earliest, he's back by Red River in two weeks. Longest I've heard is a couple of months, which would drastically change the outlook of the season for Oklahoma. I have no further info to make a guess, and I'm not big on just pulling things out of my arse to have something to say.
The backup, Mike Hawkins, is a physically talented former 4-star. He had trouble as a freshman last year behind that patchwork O-line and with no receivers to throw to, as I assume anyone would. He's had to learn a new system with the new OC coming in, so it's hard to say.
People will make predictions based on nothing, but until we see Hawkins in action against a quality opponent, it all means jack.

This is the most you'll hear about it they want texass to spend practice time preparing for both QB's.

Well, nobody will know until game time of RRS to be honest. We’ll see injury reports each Wed/Thu/Fri of game weeks. OU will keep it close to the vest so any public reports might be trickery or lack of info.
Hawkins was a true freshman thrust into a hard as hell position last year. Not only relieving Arnold, he had a failed OC and no QC coach. Throw in no WRs (injured), no OLine (injured), no TE (transferred after season), no RBs (see OLine) and basically had to learn and create on hos own.
He did pretty good later in year but lack of any support was too much.
Now fast forward a year. More mature. Has an actual OC. Has a QB coach. Has a mature seasoned QB1 to get advice from. Has OLine. Has WRs. Has the top TE in country. Has RBs.
Can’t stress enough how different this year is for Hawkins compared to last year. All accounts from fall camp were saying he was throwing and making great decisions. Keep in mind he (and Mateer) are facing one of the best D’s in practices.
I think if Hawk needs to play vs tx we’ll be fine. Of course Mateer is preferred but the drop isn’t as bad as one might think. He got top notch coaching all off season and early season.

Don't get too excited. Just because it was pulled from an arse doesn't make it your long-lost twin brother.
