SC did it for years. I heard on the radio just today that beating UT our 1st year in the SEC was probably the worst thing that could have happend to us. It made us think we were SEC ready and for over a decade we just kept on with that thought process and continued to get dominated with an upset every once in a while. Always thinking that we had a chance to just start winning vs the SEC
Now with our current AD we are actually starting to look like an SEC football program in terms of facilities, stadium being cleaned up, getting better coaches anytime one of them leaves, etc. Players are actually starting to sign with South Carolina.. not just specifically to a coach or someone.
Point being it is possible to fool or even spoil yourself thinking you are better than you are. And essentially give up trying to really improve yourself.. my beloved Gamecocks certainley did.

Thats what Im saying.. that 1st win over UT and an upset win over UGA every once in a while would poison Gamecock minds (regardless of how the season finished) that we could start competeing with the SEC. That because we beat UGA the year before or maybe didnt get blown out by a team we were supposed to.. made us believe the next year we'd have some sort of break out season without really making any changes.

umm, you do realize that Eric Berry's father was a player at UT, right? That probably accounts for a whole lot more than a state.
Kiffen better start talking, though, because right now, UT can run with big hosses on first team, but they have no depth whatsoever. In comparison to second and third teams, they simply do not compare to the other top teams in the SEC at this moment.
However, I am very happy that Kiffen decided to piss Richt off. It WILL make him and the rest of the coaches work even harder this year to beat the crap out of UT on the field and in recruiting.
