Jumping from 4 to 12 was stupid, and they are already talking about going to 14 or 16 in the next 2 years.

12 is a stupid number, but 8 with no bye would mean that Tennessee essentially got a bye this year, while #1's and #2 SEC teams played a physicial slugfest. Even with decent seedings, that's a clear advantage to any team that misses the SECCG and makes the playoff. There has to be some fairness about the process.
