copying from LINK and I'm almost sure I was listening to this broadcast, and I'm almost sure this quote is exactly correct:

"Well Eli, Smokey just came out of the tunnel, and he's about 100 yards away from me now, and if I had my deer rifle I believe I could drop him, back to you Eli"

I can’t remember the exact quote, but I did hear Jerry Duncan make a comment about being able to drop Smokey from his position on the sideline. Me and some of my friends used to listen to the entire pre-game radio broadcast up until kickoff.

Forney, Layton and Duncan in their prime was the best sports broadcast I ever heard.

And back then it mattered because only 3 or 4 games a year were televised

Millions listened.

Spent many a fall afternoon in the back yard, listening to this crew and throwing the football around with the neighborhood kids

Occasionally an Auburn arse would be around casting dispersions and cracking wise. All well and good until and unless the game was tight in the fourth. In such cases, their presence would not be tolerated. On a couple of occasions they were dispatched with great prejudice.
